The Golden Rule of FRUIT: Eat it alone or leave it alone.
This is one of the simplest strategies to implement but trust me when I say it made a WORLD of difference for my stomach pain. The reason? Fermentation.
Fruit breaks down really quickly in our warm 98-99 degree stomachs. It takes about 30 min-1 hour to digest fruit. More complex foods like grains, fats, proteins, and veggies take much longer, between 2-4+ hours.
When we eat fruit combined with other foods, the fruit breaks down first and but can’t leave the stomach yet. It starts to ferment and creates GAS. This gas causes
bloating and distention, which hurts.
Here’s the biggy: melons should ALWAYS be eaten alone. Their high water and sugar content means they break down the fastest.
Now there are a few caveats: fruit can be eaten with simple veggies, such as leafy greens, and predigested protein like in a protein powder (better with vegan protein than whey).
Also, some people’s tolerances are different. I’ve found that I can mix berries with other foods, but if I mix a higher sugar fruit like orange or mango then I’m in trouble.
